Trial of the Week: Insidious Harm of Medication Diluents

Carolyn Bell joins me to discuss her first author publication, the Insidious Harm of Medication Diluents, published in Critical Care Medicine. We review what the perception around balanced fluids was in 2016, advice for prospective research, ultimate trial take-aways, things she would do different, bribing other Pharmacists, and much more.

Loved this episode. I’m a toxicology RN, working for a poison center. I understand the shift in fluids, and agree with one exception.. please teach your residents etc about Lithium overdose. These patients really need NS at a rate to keep a minimum urine output 1-3 ml/kg/hr. It allows the kidneys to let go of lithium salts and take up the sodium instead. I keep following up on these patients once they get to the ICU, and have to beg them to change the fluids back to NS! (Especially in July….)😊.
