Rapid Reaction: BLING III

Australian Pharmacist and BLING III author, Jason Roberts, joins to discuss the findings from the recently released BLING III study, “Continuous v. Intermittent Beta-Lactam Antibiotic Infusions in Critically Ill Patients with Sepsis.”

BLING III trial represents our largest study (by far) comparing antibiotic administration in sepsis and its effects on patient outcomes. One of the Pharmacist authors from the study, Jason Roberts, joins to dive into the findings as well as the results from a simultaneous systematic review and meta-analysis.

The episode begins with a review of the pertinent research from the BLING research group, specifically BLING I and II. What were positive findings from earlier studies? What was the biggest obstacle to completing BLING III?

Then Jason and I review the study design and findings from this JAMA study. How do we compare these findings to the SR/MA? How were the antibiotics chosen? Can we apply these findings to extended-interval dosing or just continuous infusion?

Closing out the BLING III rapid reaction is a discussion at nursing or pharmacy-specific concerns with implementing extended interval dosing, future directions from the BLING research group, and why this trial gives evidence that all should utilize continuous infusion dosing of beta-lactam antibiotics in the critically ill. We also discuss mailbag questions, the BLING logo, and much, much more!
